Across the Universe by Jessica de Koninck

Esther reminds me that there is
more than one man in the universe.

I spend a lot of time
thinking about cosmology.

Our universe is nearly fourteen billion
years old, not that large a number,

considering America’s billionaires
and their infinite quest for more.

Cosmology sometimes gets confused
with cosmetology, not unlike the way

astronomy and astrology are not
the same thing. In the HuffPost I

read you may not spend your life
with your true love.

Probably there were earlier universes
or proto-universes or something.

John Lennon, young, alive and beautiful,
sings “Across the Universe” on TV

in the documentary, Let It Be.
Twice in my life I have been in love.

Neither ended happily ever after.
Fifty years later, the break-up

of the Beatles interests me less
than watching them create and perform.

I wake from a dream. Paul McCartney
scribbles lyrics while strapped

into a seat on a spaceship.
I tell myself, Just get to work.
