AS I WALKED A WOODED PATH ON A SATURDAY IN JUNE by Joel Allegretti

        After a brief encounter

I didn’t see deer
out to forage, but
I passed a man
who was smoking
a cigarette
and carrying
two white
dress shirts
on hangers.
“Nice shirts,”
I said.
“Thanks,”
he replied.
“Why,” I felt
compelled
to inquire,
“are you carrying
two dress shirts
in the woods?”
“Two dress shirts?”
the man repeated
and looked
at the garments
that hung
from his fingers.
“Damn,” he said.
“I dropped one.”
