Hitler, a small dark man,
Reached a pinnacle of power
Because of another small dark man,
A man beloved by the masses:
Famous in France as Charlot,
In Japan and, yes, in Germany.

Hitler knew what he was doing
When he trimmed his moustache
to make it look almost exactly
Like Charlie Chaplin’s.
I truly believe that the Germans
Were following Charlie Chaplin
In their subconscious
When they goose-stepped off
To their fate.

And it’s interesting to note
That the brilliant film,
The Great Dictator,
That Chaplin made about
Adolf Hitler, led to a decline
In his international stature.
History works in strange ways.
